This debuted on the West End in the 05-06 season. Supposedly Elyot's version was much more gruesome than Christie's own adaptation, and showed a good deal of violence onstage, including the original ending.

Did anyone manage to see it? There's very little information online; it is all the same publicity packet stuff about the premise of the show rather than any actual information on the changes Elyot made. It'd be great to find out more.

Spoilet warning!!
In the book Armstrong finds the General - in the BBC version it is Ms. Brent.
This seems an error to me - in the book it pretty much seals Vera's prime suspect as the Doctor... she convinces Lombard of this by pointing out he had the chance to commit the murder as he ran to find him then lie about his time if death.
By losing this point in the tv version it might be that Lombard would need more convincing.
Just a tiny point I know but that insight if Vera's in the original was always a very significant indication of her own tenacity and logical thinking in an extreme situation, and I was saddened it was not transposed faithfully in the remake.

For many of you that are on this website, I am pretty sure that you have read this book. After reading it, i have realized how much irony which has been set in this book. At the beginning it begins with the poem. The last person to be killed is "hung". After looking back at the poem when Christie gave the character's description one character stood out to be the killer, Justice Wargrave. Many of you may wonder why I think this. Wargrave was known as the "hanging judge" but it was never himself in which he wanted to be charged with crime. He never had a real motive to hang every person he did. Also, Emily Brent was charged with the death of Beatrice Taylor, with irony in mind, she was "stung by a bee." Is this coincidence or not?

The challenge is simple: You are in charge of casting a big-budget screen version of "And Then There Were None". Cast the ten guests on Indian Island. You also have the option on the four additional characters from the novel - Fred Naracott (the boatman), Isaac Morris (Mr. Owen's representative) and the two detectives from Scotland Yard who appear in the Epilogue: Assistant Commissioner Sir Thomas Legge and Inspector Maine. And finally, would your version end like the stage play ("He got married") or the novel ("He went and hanged himself")?

To get things started, here is my list:

Dr. Armstrong - Sir Anthony Hopkins

William Blore - Gerard Butler

Emily Brent - Helen Mirren (for me, this was the hardest to cast. But if anyone can play sweet one moment and intense the next, it's her!)

Vera Claythorne - Emma Watson (a bit young, yes, but she can definitely pull off that "schoolmistressy" look described in the novel)

Philip Lombard - Daniel Craig

General Macarthur - Sir Sean Connery

Anthony Marston - Alexander Skarsgard

Ethel Rogers - Tilda Swinton

Thomas Rogers - Benedict Cumberbatch

Judge Wargrave - Sir Ian McKellen

Fred Naracott - Harrison Ford (a bit part but if you've seen the new "Star Wars" movie you know he can play a grizzled boatman just fine)

Isaac Morris - Alan Cumming (need someone to play smarmy and slimy? Look no further)

A.C. Sir Thomas Legge - Jonny Rees (stage name: Greg Ellis, He definitely has that authoritative look)

Inspector Maine - Peter Windhofer (also has that no-nonsense commanding look)

Finally, I would go with the novel's ending -- it would give audiences a jolt if they're used to the previous film versions (not counting the Russian version, of course)

Thanks for reading. So....what are your choices?

I am hesitant to criticize any element of And Then There Were None because it is probably my favorite book of all time, however, in the interest of opening up a discourse with fellow fans, here goes:

SPOILER

Of course, we learn from the epilogue that Judge Wargrave did it. He systematically killed (or arranged the death) of nine people who could not be punished for, what in his mind were, capital crimes. It is all very clever, especially how he inserts his own 'murder' into the middle of the action with the unwitting (or half-witted) assistance of the doctor. We then learn that when the 10th victim or 'Indian,' is dead, he rigs a shotgun in such a way as to make his suicide appear to be a murder. My one gripe is that as clever as his plan was and as good of a read as the book was, he really had no hope of 'getting away with it.' Yes, we know that he sentenced an innocent man to death and with his bizarre sense of justice he considered himself no more worthy than the rest to escape execution. However, in eliminating any expectation that he, himself, would survive, there was really no need for the deaths of those nine people to be so clever and suspenseful. Even if he was able to get a ferry back to the mainland, he still would have had to have explained how he survived and all other guests perished. There was no hope in accomplishing that. I first read this novel at age 11, and that aspect stuck out in my head then. Twenty-six years later it remains a gripe of mine. Don't get me wrong - it is probably the finest example of suspense ever put to paper, and the original film from 1945 is one of the most chilling films I have ever seen - even with the Hollywood ending. I just wonder why the mystery couldn't have been revealed to the reader in such a way as the judge got his vengeance got away with it, to boot.
