Just finished reading Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz. No doubt many of you are already aware of it, but just in case: it is two mysteries in one, one of them an homage to Dame Agatha and the other a contemporary puzzler. While there is a bit of spoofing going on, the author clearly respects the genre of the "Golden Age" mysteries. If you like Dame Agatha, you may like this one too. See if you can solve the riddle!

Do you think the quality of crime fiction today MATCHES or SURPASSES that of the Golden Age Detective fiction period? Sure, not every mystery story published during the Golden Age period but as a whole do you think that period exemplified the best of detective fiction and put the genre on the map and made it more mainstream? Does today's crime fiction --ok, let me put the question another way, are there any modern crime fiction stories that display signs of innovation, imagination, original & unforgettable plots/detectives, or ingeniousness? To make it clearer when I say "modern crime stories", I don't mean stories only set in the contemporary period . . . .not only contemporary but historical as well.

Do you read any other authors? I didn't read crime fiction at all until I discovered Agatha Christie but after reading Partners in Crime, I started reading the authors whose works the short stories are based on. I also read Dorothy L Sayers and Reginald Hill.

My top 5

1. I'm sure you can guess.

2. AEW Mason - one of the authors parodied in Partners in Crime. Exciting stories and very amusing dialogue.

3. Reginald Hill - very intricate plots, lively characters and I find it quite difficult to guess the murderer because I have enough to do remembering the strands of the plot.

4. Anthony Berkeley - I've only read one of his (Jumping Jenny) and I completely disagreed with the ending on moral grounds but I found the characters very likeable.

5. Arthur Conan Doyle - not so keen on the novels but I really enjoy the short stories and the Holmes/Watson relationship.

Others:

Dorothy Sayers (great plots but I keep getting the characters confused)

R. Austin Freeman (I find the science fascinating)

Edgar Wallace (I loved the idea of it but found it boring to read about which I'm sure it my fault)

PD James (maybe I need to try her again - I read Death Comes to Pemberley which just didn't work for me as a Pride & Prejudice sequel)

GK Chesterton (some stories were really gripping)

I have Herbert George Jenkins on my bookshelf along with more AEW Mason and Anthony Berkeley. Plus ten Agatha Christie novels and six plays. I read a few other genres so it'll take me a while to read them all but I have a lot to look forward to.

I'm writing a story and one particular aspect of the story is that it involves one of the characters taking the train to his place of employment everyday. The story is set in 1930's England but one thing that I'm totally unfamiliar and ignorant with are trains in the aspects of which train on the station leads to where and all that. As I read Agatha Christie's books she so clearly understands it because for one she took trains and two, she lived in England and I haven't experienced trains or even went to London, nevermind talking about living there! Can anyone help me if they could? I know I haven't said much to go out on but some help would sure be great I've been trying to do some research but so far, no good. I know the most successful Wimsey productions were the ones from the 70's with Ian Carmichael and the ones from the 80's with Edward Petherbridge. But does anything think it's time for a new actor to put on the monocle and play Lord Peter Wimsey and star in ALL of the books and the short stories.....including the last book in the series "Busman's Honeymoon" which unfortunately was not adapted when Petherbridge played the role.

Here in Canada, we have a popular TV series called Murdoch Mysteries, set in the early 1900s, in Toronto. The series combines humour, drama, romance, adventure, action, the struggle for women's rights, historical fact, a bit early CSI, and, of course, exotic mysteries. Real historic people, such as Churchill, Kipling, and Mark Twain, are often portrayed in the shows. The writing and acting are top notch. I think the series appears in some other countries beside Canada, but I believe it can be watched on the Internet on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) website. Anyway, it has a Facebook page with interactive cases — you read all the clues, and then try to solve the crime. Even if you can't watch the TV show It's fun.

Being a person with a deep interest in people, I have decided to create this discussion so that people could say a bit about themselves, just to give a bit of background to who they are as I like to know a bit about people. It does not have to be long and can be what interests you (other than Agatha Christie of course) it could even be just simply saying what your job is, it does not even have to be personal. Anything!!!

For example a bit about myself, I am a UKIP (UK Independence party) supporter. I think we should pull out of Europe as we give £42 million a day to them. (Not an exaggeration) I also like cycling. In fact one of my jobs is a bike mechanic. My other job is a minister of a church. As I am a Christian and I think that evolution is the biggest joke this century. To find out why copy this into your URL to watch this lecture by Dr. Hovind. .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8DDIe_2cHM

I also like debates. I was on the radio once debating someone

Well that is enough about me. What about you?

Hello everyone. The admin team created this new section on the forum and thought I would start a discussion where people could post books that they have read that resememble Agatha Christie's style. Has anyone read a book that reminded them a bit of Agatha Christie, a mystery set in a secluded setting, perhaps an old dark house, a book with lots of suspects, etc..Please list your books here! As a huge mystery book fan, I always enjoy hearing other people's suggestions.
