Is it the old lawyer, Mr. Treves, in "Towards zero"? he fits everything except "Several recurring characters" - inspector Battle appears, and Dr. Lazenby who is mentioned in "Final Curtain" but that's all.

It is a man. And - erm... I'm not exactly sure whether he was the first victim... It wasn't made very clear. I could tell you that he died abroad to make up for the absence of that answer.
