No because to add one letter you would get Jane but the word in this story isn't a name just a sought of nickname although the lebgthened version is not a name you can be christened with I don't think, the shortened version is a noun just like the name of the Character in a different short story, I hope that is as clear as I can make it without giving the thing away.
There is something Unique about this short story if I remember rightly, I think I am right, I listened to it a couple of weeks ago but I might just be wrong about one strange detail
Hint; Towards the end of The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side Cherry's Husband is listening to The 1812 Overture and then Cherry goes to a friends house and does something, that is a clue to what this short story is.

Does the name shortened now become Jan?
Is it a Poirot short story?
(I am still confused. I can think of Oliver becoming Olive but that is a name not just a noun)

Thanks for the clue.
Is it "The Dessmaker's Doll"?
I guess you drop the "y" from "Dolly" and Cherry's friend is dressmaking!
Ok.
Grief, Greed, Impersonation
There is a game already to guess the novel.
Does nobody want to make a guess?
I thought this was an easy one!
Does it include Miss Marple? - No
Or does it include Tuppence or Tommy? - No
