O.K. I will give you a hint, think of a Female Recurring Character and shorten her name by 1 letter.
  • Does the name shortened now become Jan?

  • Tommy_A_JonesTommy_A_Jones Gloucestershire, United Kingdom
No because to add one letter you would get Jane but the word in this story isn't a name just a sought of nickname although the lebgthened version is not a name you can be christened with I don't think, the shortened version is a noun just like the name of the Character in a different short story, I hope that is as clear as I can make it without giving the thing away.

Is it a Poirot short story?

(I am still confused. I can think of Oliver becoming Olive but that is a name not just a noun)

  • THE EDGE?
  • Tommy_A_JonesTommy_A_Jones Gloucestershire, United Kingdom
Not a Poirot short story, There are no recurring Character's, I don't recall The Edge

Think of a first name do it alphabeticaly and think of shortened versions of those names, You won't have to go very far.
  • I think of "The affair at the bungalow", a short story ( Tuesday night club)

  • Tommy_A_JonesTommy_A_Jones Gloucestershire, United Kingdom
No It is a short story without recurring Characters
  • Is it about "Philomel cottage"?

Alix, without the "x" is Ali , the prince in "Cat among the pigeons".

  • Tommy_A_JonesTommy_A_Jones Gloucestershire, United Kingdom
No, The Name of a Character in 2 Christie books and some short stories can be shortened to make a word in this short story.

There is something Unique about this short story if I remember rightly, I think I am right, I listened to it a couple of weeks ago but I might just be wrong about one strange detail

  • Is the word made from the name in the title of the story?
  • Tommy_A_JonesTommy_A_Jones Gloucestershire, United Kingdom
    Yes

Hint; Towards the end of The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side Cherry's Husband is listening to The 1812 Overture and then Cherry goes to a friends house and does something, that is a clue to what this short story is.

  • Thanks for the clue.

    Is it "The Dessmaker's Doll"?

I guess you drop the "y" from "Dolly" and Cherry's friend is dressmaking!

  • Tommy_A_JonesTommy_A_Jones Gloucestershire, United Kingdom
Yes Well Done Anne Your Turn.
  • Ok.

    Grief, Greed, Impersonation
