Amateur Production Sheffield - stage vs TV

Hello all! I'm currently directing a production of And Then in Sheffield.  We're performing 10th-13th February at The University Drama Studio if any of you are local!  For those who know both the novel and the play and, particularly, those who have watched the recent BBC adaptation, what parts of the story stand out most for you as comedic or dramatic?  How much of the character's back stories do you imagine yourself, or do you like it all spelled out for you?  I'd love to have any ideas that you think we could bring to the stage to improve our production.  Thanks!
